139 pediatric cases in Tetovo in 48 hours, 12 children hospitalized

The Pediatrics Department at Tetovo Clinical Hospital has admitted 139 new cases over the past 48 hours. The increase in the number of children seeking treatment is mainly linked to symptoms such as high fever, vomiting and diarrhea.

According to department data, 12 of the 139 children treated were hospitalized, while the others were discharged to continue their treatment at home.

Dr. Isa Osmani, a pediatric specialist, says that most of the cases involve seasonal viral infections. He explains that their spread during the summer is facilitated by high temperatures, feeding practices and frequent contact between children.

“In this age group, the overwhelming majority of cases are caused by seasonal viral infections. High temperatures, feeding practices, the use of formula milk, which requires very careful hygiene during preparation, as well as contact between sick and healthy children, contribute to their spread. These viral infections are contagious and are accompanied by specific symptoms. However, diarrhea or vomiting does not mean that a child should be taken to the hospital immediately. Parents should have electrolytes available and use various feeding methods to prevent dehydration. Parents often fear that their child may become dehydrated,” pediatrician Isa Osmani said.

The Alliance for Albanians has also responded to the number of cases in Tetovo, calling on institutions to provide explanations for what it describes as silence regarding the situation.

“Why are they silent now? Public health cannot be addressed depending on the municipality, the mayor or the political interests of the day. When figures are used for political attacks in Gostivar, while silence is chosen over serious figures in Tetovo, citizens have the right to demand answers,” the AA statement said.

Doctors are urging parents to pay particular attention to food hygiene, provide their children with sufficient fluids and avoid contact with affected individuals in order to curb the further spread of viral infections.
