Zelensky: New Canadian air defense package essential for Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced today that Canada will provide significant assistance in the air defense sector, as well as support for the country’s energy sector. The statement was made shortly before his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Canada has stood out as one of Kyiv’s most resolute allies, committing a total of 25.5 billion Canadian dollars in aid, of which 8.5 billion has been dedicated to military assistance.

In a context where Moscow is intensifying its offensive, Ukraine is facing a severe shortage of U.S.-made Patriot missiles, essential for intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.

“It is a very important package in the field of air defense. It will be vital,” Zelensky emphasized before media representatives, without providing further details on its composition or the nature of the energy sector assistance.

For his part, Prime Minister Carney pledged that his country will continue to provide Ukraine with more assistance to counter Russian aggression, while also supporting it on its path toward NATO and European Union membership.

Immediately after arriving on Canadian soil, the Ukrainian leader had indicated that strengthening air defense capabilities and preparatory measures for the winter season would be the main focus of this visit.
