Zelensky: Fedorov remains part of my team; new duties to be announced later

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Mykhailo Fedorov, the defence minister whom he dismissed two days earlier, will remain part of the presidential team. According to him, Fedorov’s new responsibilities will be announced at a later date.

The position was expressed after lawmakers voted on most of the appointments to the new government cabinet, while the posts of defence minister and foreign minister remained unapproved.

“During wartime, the president should not be the one making decisions in such a situation. I would like to see more unity. The sides have not managed to find it, and the problem lies not only with the parties, but also with me,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian head of state said he accepts responsibility for the political developments and has no intention of shirking it.

“I am not absolving myself of responsibility. Fedorov will remain on my team, but his new role will be made known later,” he added.

The reshuffle of the Ukrainian government comes at a time when Ukraine continues to face Russian aggression, as well as considerable difficulties in defence, the economy and the coordination of international aid. Zelensky dismissed Mykhailo Fedorov after a meeting with military leaders. The decision sparked reactions in political and military circles, opening discussions over the oversight of Ukraine’s defence against the invasion launched by Russia. The decision was also followed by street protests in many Ukrainian cities.

The 35-year-old, known for his technological skills, had led initiatives to digitalise the state administration and had promoted innovation in the use of drones as an important weapon in the war.
