War in the Middle East Boosts Oil Companies’ Profits as Six EU States Call for Windfall Tax

Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, Portugal and Spain are calling on the European Union to consider imposing a joint tax on the windfall profits of oil companies, which have risen significantly following the war in the Middle East and its impact on energy markets.

The finance ministers of the six countries have sent a joint letter to Ireland’s finance minister, as Ireland currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council.

In their document, the ministers are calling for the issue of taxing windfall profits to be included on the agenda of the next meeting of European finance ministers, which will be held in Dublin next month.

According to the ministers, oil companies are recording higher profit margins and rising revenues, while oil prices and energy costs have increased, making the cost-of-living crisis even more severe for citizens.

The proposal calls for discussion of a common European mechanism for taxing windfall profits. The experience of 2022, when the EU adopted similar measures following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, will also be taken into account in the process.

The initiative was prompted by German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, who has said that energy companies should not benefit excessively while consumers are facing the crisis.

A source from the German ministry said that “excess profits from the crisis should be returned to consumers.”

Energy companies’ revenues have risen sharply since the start of the US-Israel war against Iran in February. Meanwhile, restrictions on maritime traffic in the strategic Strait of Hormuz have affected global energy supplies.

So far, the European Union has given no official indication that it will impose such a tax. There is also no agreement on the measure in Germany: Lars Klingbeil supports it, while Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservative CDU wing is opposed.
