Vučić resigns as president of Serbia, speaks with Putin by phone; here is what the two leaders discussed

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić is expected to submit his resignation from the presidency today after announcing that he will leave office to focus on snap parliamentary elections. Before stepping down from the presidency, Vučić held an approximately one-hour phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to reports from foreign media, the main topic of discussion was Serbia’s gas supply. The current agreement expires on September 30, and Vučić said he expects it to be extended, ensuring stable gas supplies. He also mentioned a price of approximately 318 euros per 1,000 cubic meters, compared with the market price of around 868 euros.

During the call, the two leaders also discussed the situation of the Serbian oil company NIS, in which Russia owns a considerable share of the stock. According to Vučić, the parties hope to find a solution to the issue involving the company, which has been affected by US sanctions.

At the same time, the conversation also covered other issues, including cooperation with Russian Railways, the war in Ukraine and developments in the Western Balkans. Vučić thanked Putin for their cooperation over the past 14 years and informed him of his resignation. After stepping down, Vučić intends to return to the political race through the snap parliamentary elections on October 25.
