In a Facebook post, former Socialist Party MP Pandeli Majko commented on Aleksandar Vučić’s election defeat, saying that “history will remember him for his failures and for what he destroyed.”
Majko writes that political power, economic interests and security structures were used to consolidate the position of a particular ruling group, weakening state institutions.

In his view, Aleksandar Vučić was unable to resist the temptation of power, and morality was a luxury that Serbia’s political system could not afford.
“Aleksandar Vučić was the symbol of a system in which political power and economic interests fed off each other. The result was the dismantling of the administrative state! He turned Serbia into a state where laws, the administration and security structures were used to consolidate the interests of a ruling group drawn from politics, business and organized crime! During Aleksandar Vučić’s time in government, control over Serbia’s institutions was not an end in itself,” Majko writes. The former prime minister and Socialist Party MP concludes his post by saying that Aleksandar Vučić lost the election yesterday and that “as of yesterday, he no longer controls events! Now they are the ones who will control him.”
Full statement:
VUČIĆ’S DEPARTURE… Aleksandar Vučić has left power! He was not toppled like a tyrant. He stepped aside like an old figure who had outlived his time! Aleksandar Vučić could not withstand the power of the new media world of social networks, fast and noisy. History will remember him not for his achievements but for his failures! Not for what he built, but for what he destroyed! Aleksandar Vučić had charm! He was unconventional and unafraid to experiment. But he was careless and self-destructive! The same qualities that had made him successful, and his desire to make himself acceptable, were what brought him into crisis! Aleksandar Vučić was unable to resist the temptation of power! For him, morality was a luxury that Serbia’s political system could not afford!
Aleksandar Vučić was the symbol of a system in which political power and economic interests fed off each other. The result was the dismantling of the administrative state! He turned Serbia into a state where laws, the administration and security structures were used to consolidate the interests of a ruling group drawn from politics, business and organized crime! During Aleksandar Vučić’s time in government, control over Serbia’s institutions was not an end in itself.
It served to secure wealth, protect allies and weaken any mechanism that could prevent the continuity of power. The “Vučić doctrine” was a revolutionary departure from traditional mafia practices in how control is exercised. It shifted the meaning of corruption from an isolated violation of the law to an organized system in which the state becomes an “assistant”! In this logic, compromising with lawbreaking was not betrayal but a necessity. Aleksandar Vučić will be remembered not for any moral greatness, but for his untouchability. Aleksandar Vučić lost the election yesterday! As of yesterday, he no longer controls events! Now they are the ones who will control him!
