European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will be in Kosovo on Thursday, October 1. During her stay in Pristina, she is expected to hold meetings with acting President Albulena Haxhiu and Prime Minister Albin Kurti, her office said.

The visit to Kosovo is part of a tour of the Western Balkans. Von der Leyen’s trip begins in Tirana on Wednesday, continues in Podgorica on Thursday after Pristina, and ends in Skopje on Friday. According to the European Commission, the discussions will focus on the prospects of EU membership, gradual integration and the implementation of the Growth Plan for the region.
The trip comes as the European Commission is preparing roadmaps for candidate countries that have made greater progress. Von der Leyen announced the initiative in her September 16 speech, but did not name the countries. Media reports suggest that the documents will include Albania and Montenegro in the Western Balkans, as well as Moldova and Ukraine in Eastern Europe. The roadmaps are intended to define the reforms, conditions and indicative timelines for the next stages of negotiations, while the proposals have not yet been officially presented.
During her visit to Podgorica, the European Commission president will meet with President Jakov Milatović and Prime Minister Milojko Spajić. Montenegro is considered the most advanced country in the membership negotiations process, having opened all 33 chapters and provisionally closed 18 of them, according to the European Commission’s latest data.
According to reports from the European Commission, the European Union has also begun preparations for Montenegro’s accession treaty and has proposed a financial package to support the country’s possible transition toward membership.
Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are not included in the tour’s current itinerary. The European Commission has said that von der Leyen intends to visit the two countries at a later time because of upcoming elections there.
