Video/ Wreckage of Pan Am Plane Found in Atlantic After 74 Years, Crash Led to New Aviation Rules

The wreckage of Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) Flight 526A, which had been missing for more than seven decades, has been found on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean by an international team of researchers. The accident is considered one of the worst tragedies in civil aviation.

The aircraft’s remains were located on June 2, about eight kilometers off the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, at a depth of approximately 600 meters. An autonomous underwater vehicle equipped with sonar and high-resolution cameras was used in the discovery, scanning the area for several days.

Initial footage confirmed that it was the Pan Am aircraft, The New York Times reported. The company’s logo, parts of the aircraft’s structure, the landing gear and cabin windows could be seen. Despite having spent 74 years underwater, a significant portion of the structure has been surprisingly well preserved.

Also known as the “Easter Special,” Flight 526A departed San Juan for New York on April 11, 1952. Nine minutes after takeoff, two of the Douglas DC-4’s four engines malfunctioned. The pilot attempted to return to the airport, but the aircraft’s continued loss of altitude forced him to make an emergency landing in the Atlantic.

All 69 people on board survived the initial impact with the water. Just minutes later, however, the aircraft’s structure broke apart and it began to sink. Rough seas, confusion during the evacuation and the reluctance of many passengers to leave the aircraft had fatal consequences. A total of 52 people died, most of them from drowning, while the bodies of 39 victims were never found.

Josh Gates, host of the Discovery Channel program “Expedition Unknown,” also took part in the search project and described the discovery as a deeply emotional moment.

He said the team had been left speechless upon seeing the first images. According to Gates, the aircraft was exceptionally well preserved, and seeing its still-identifiable structure on the seabed was an incredible experience.

According to experts, the 1952 accident became a pivotal moment for civil aviation. The tragedy led to the adoption of new safety procedures, including the mandatory instructions given to passengers before every flight, which remain in use today.

The search was led by the Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, but was hampered for years by difficult weather conditions and the COVID-19 pandemic. The autonomous submersible carried out about 30 missions over the site where the aircraft sank and captured more than 350,000 photographs.

The research team announced that no operations would be conducted to recover the wreckage or search for human remains, as the site will be treated as a memorial to the tragedy.
