US warns of mass gatherings in Kosovo ahead of ruling on former KLA leaders

The US Embassy in Pristina has issued a security alert for citizens, announcing that major demonstrations are expected on Wednesday, September 16, in the capital and several of Kosovo’s main centers.

The notice states that various organizations have announced large protests, which could lead to massive gatherings, road blockages and severe disruptions to vehicle traffic.

Citizens are advised to limit travel to the area where they live and avoid heading toward locations where gatherings have been announced.

The diplomatic mission also warns that passing through the affected areas could cause significant delays and make it impossible to reach destinations on time.

“These demonstrations may result in very large crowds, road blockages and serious traffic disruptions. You are advised to limit your movements to the vicinity of your residence and avoid traveling to work or school if your route passes through the affected areas, as you may be unable to reach your destination on time,” the statement says.

US government staff in Kosovo have been instructed to avoid all nonessential travel near protest sites. Given the possibility of traffic chaos, personnel were advised not to take their children to school on September 16.

The Embassy said it would remain open on Wednesday, while consular services would be available on a limited basis and only for essential cases.

The warning coincides with an extremely sensitive date for Kosovo. On September 16, the verdict is expected to be announced in the court case against former commanders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

The trial in The Hague centers on Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi, who face charges of war crimes.

Expectations surrounding the verdict have significantly increased public interest and attention in Kosovo. Although tensions are evident, the US Embassy has not directly linked its warning to the ruling of the Specialist Chambers.
