US gives preliminary approval for $2.7 billion military package for Ukraine

The US State Department has informed Congress that preliminary approval has been granted for a military package containing several types of missiles, launch systems, counter-drone radars and other equipment.

Before the deal can be implemented, it still requires final approval from the US Congress. The State Department said that, if the purchase goes ahead, it will be financed through contributions from European countries and US military aid funds approved during the Joe Biden administration.

President Donald Trump has called on European countries to cover a larger share of the cost of supporting Ukraine. The new package comes as Ukraine’s air defenses are facing ammunition shortages and Russia has stepped up attacks on Kyiv and other areas.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled because of territorial disputes. Ukraine wants the conflict frozen along the current front line, while Russia is demanding full control over the Donetsk region.
