US Congressmen Seek Priority Support for Strategic GSI Project in the Eastern Mediterranean

A bipartisan group of lawmakers in the US Congress has called on the US government to prioritize the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) as a project that could strengthen American engagement in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The initiative is led by Representatives Brad Snyder, D-Ill., and Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla. Together with four colleagues, they sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Benjamin Black, head of the US International Development Finance Corporation.

In the lawmakers’ assessment, the GSI should be viewed not only as an energy investment, but also as an essential component of the broader strategy for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

For this reason, they requested a classified briefing from Rubio and Black on the geopolitical obstacles affecting the project’s completion, emphasizing its strategic and geopolitical significance.

The letter states that the successful development and expansion of IMEC will be important for the region’s prosperity and stability, as well as for the security and national interests of the United States.

According to the congressmen, the Eastern Mediterranean is expected to serve as a vital gateway for IMEC. In this context, the GSI is described as one of the key strategic infrastructure projects needed to establish the corridor.

They believe the region is becoming an important energy and infrastructure hub linking Europe, the Middle East and India.

The lawmakers argue that the United States has a direct interest in ensuring that this development strengthens American partners, expands alternative energy routes, advances regional integration and provides a transparent alternative to infrastructure controlled by strategic competitors.

The GSI aims to connect key US partners along a corridor of strategic importance.

According to the letter’s authors, its implementation would end Cyprus’s isolation from the European electricity transmission system, strengthen Israel’s energy security and establish a platform for two-way, clean and reliable electricity exchanges between Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The congressmen emphasize that the project also fulfills the objectives of the Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act. This bipartisan legislative initiative defines the region as a crucial link connecting India, the Middle East and Europe.

According to them, the initiative would give the Eastern Mediterranean greater prominence in US foreign policy, support cross-border energy interconnections and infrastructure projects, and strengthen strategic coordination with other regional partners.

In the concluding section of the letter, the lawmakers recall the United States’ longstanding interest in promoting cooperation, security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

They call on the US administration to treat the GSI as a priority and organize a classified briefing to examine the geopolitical challenges surrounding the project’s completion.
