UNMIK chief reacts after tragedy in Livoç i Ulët: Violence is unacceptable

Two people were killed and another was injured on Friday in the village of Livoç i Ulët in Gjilan, after a man allegedly opened fire with a firearm.

According to the Kosovo Police, the suspect has been arrested. The victims who died were his wife and her brother, while the injured person was the son of the wife’s uncle. At the two crime scenes, police seized 4 bullets, 21 shell casings and 5 projectiles.

On the prosecutor’s orders, searches were conducted at the suspect’s homes and properties. During the search, 2 long firearms with expired permits, 1 unlicensed pistol, 1 air gun, 520 rounds of various calibers and 1,600 air-rifle pellets were found and seized.

Peter Due, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of UNMIK, strongly condemned the tragic killings of a woman and her brother yesterday in Livoç i Ulët in Gjilan, as well as the injury of another family member.

He extended his sincere condolences to the victims’ family and relatives and wished the injured person a speedy recovery.

“This tragic loss of life highlights the devastating human cost of gender-based violence. Such violence is unacceptable and must never be tolerated or treated as a private matter,” he declared.

The head of UNMIK called on the relevant institutions to continue their coordinated efforts to prevent gender-based violence.
