Unexpected Court Development: Luigi Mangione May Plead Guilty to Killing CEO in New York

Luigi Mangione is expected to plead guilty as early as Friday in the federal case involving the stalking and killing of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson.

The Associated Press reported the development, citing a person familiar with the case who spoke on condition of anonymity. According to the source, however, Mangione could still change his decision.

A hearing has been unexpectedly scheduled for Friday in Manhattan federal court. It is not yet known which charges Mangione will admit to, while defense lawyers and federal prosecutors have been negotiating a resolution to the case in recent weeks.

Mangione, 28, is accused of traveling to New York and lying in wait for Thompson, 50, whom he allegedly shot dead on December 4, 2024, outside a Manhattan hotel. At the time, the company executive was on his way to UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference.

Mangione faces two separate criminal proceedings: a federal case and another in New York state. In the state case, in which he is charged with Thompson’s murder, the trial is scheduled to begin on September 8.

Defense attorneys have argued that the proceedings in both jurisdictions stem from the same incident. For this reason, they have cited the principle of “double jeopardy,” which, under certain circumstances, prohibits a person from being prosecuted twice.

If Mangione pleads guilty in the federal case, his defense may seek to have the state charges dismissed on the basis of that principle. New York prosecutors, for their part, dispute this reasoning and say their prosecution constitutes a separate case.

Mangione’s case has attracted widespread attention in the United States. He was arrested five days after the killing at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, approximately 370 kilometers from Manhattan.

Federal prosecutors allege that the attack was planned by Mangione, who traveled from one state to another to carry it out. A 3D-printed gun and a notebook were also found during the investigation, items authorities have described as significant evidence.

In January, federal Judge Margaret Garnett ruled out the death penalty as an option in the federal case. At the same time, she authorized the use of some of the evidence seized at the time of Mangione’s arrest.

If Mangione formally enters the expected guilty plea on Friday, the move could significantly affect both the federal proceedings and the trial scheduled in New York. At this stage, however, no official guilty plea has been entered, and the agreement could change or fall through before the hearing.
