Typhoon Dujuan puts Japan on alert, trains halted and flights and concerts canceled

Japan’s Meteorological Agency has warned of exceptionally heavy rainfall that could reach record levels by Tuesday, particularly along coastal areas. Powerful Typhoon Dujuan is approaching the country’s eastern coast, prompting the activation of emergency alerts in Tokyo and surrounding areas. Residents have been urged to follow evacuation instructions.

A Level 5 alert, the highest level in Japan’s warning system, has been issued in the town of Oshima and the Izu Islands, south of Tokyo Prefecture. The measure affects around 1,900 households and more than 3,000 residents.

Meanwhile, authorities in Tokyo’s Meguro Ward have raised a Level 4 alert over the risk of flooding and landslides. A Level 3 alert remains in effect in the center of the capital.

The storm has also affected air and rail transport. Around 500 flights from Haneda and Narita airports have been canceled, while some high-speed train services on the Tokaido Line have been suspended.

Bad weather has led to the cancellation of several public events. Monday’s concerts at the Rock in Japan music festival will not take place, while Monday’s program at the Tokyo Game Show has also been suspended.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has urged citizens to take official warnings and evacuation instructions seriously.
