Trump rejects AI alarm: I do not see it as an existential threat to humanity, while Anthropic ends up on the U.S. blacklist

Donald Trump has defended the rules introduced by his administration for artificial intelligence, saying that the United States has put the necessary safeguards in place. He also claimed that China relies solely on its leader to control technological developments and insisted that America is ahead of Beijing in the AI race.

The U.S. president dismissed warnings that artificial intelligence could have existential consequences for humanity. His comments came after experts, employees and researchers at some of the biggest AI laboratories, including Anthropic and OpenAI, intensified their public warnings about the technology’s risks.

Asked whether he was concerned that AI could lead to the extinction of humanity, Trump said he had no such concern. “No, I’m not concerned at all. I’m only concerned that if we don’t win in the field of AI, we’ll find ourselves in a very bad position,” he told reporters.

Washington and Beijing are engaged in a fierce race for dominance in artificial intelligence. The rivalry has grown even more intense as Chinese AI models have advanced and their use has expanded in various countries around the world.

Jacob Coxon, an Anthropic expert, announced a few days ago that he was leaving the company. He said the decision was linked to concerns that Anthropic and its rival OpenAI were “gambling with people’s lives.”

Coxon said that people involved in developing artificial intelligence systems believe they could “kill us all by the end of this decade.” One of the main reasons for concern is the possibility that models could gain the ability to independently improve their performance without relying on their creators.
