Trump in Ankara for NATO Summit, 1,000-Person Delegation and Extreme Security Measures

This Tuesday, United States President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in Ankara to take part in the NATO Summit, which will be held on July 7 and 8.

His presence has triggered an extraordinary security plan, as the American delegation consists of around 1,000 people and Turkish authorities, together with the U.S. Secret Service, have put unprecedented measures in place.

According to Turkish media reports, the special vehicles that will be used by the American president have already arrived in the Turkish capital. The presidential helicopter has also been transported in pieces, to be assembled ადგილზე.

The hotel where Trump will stay has been turned into a fortified zone. U.S. Secret Service agents have carried out detailed checks both inside the hotel and in the surrounding perimeter, while the building has been completely closed to the public until the American president’s arrival.

The American president will stay in a presidential suite of around 190 square meters, which includes a separate bedroom, living room, private office and workspace. Turkish media report that the windows of this suite are bulletproof, while the walls have been built to withstand possible explosions.

The level of security in the area is extremely high. Special forces, Turkish police and the U.S. Secret Service have set up checkpoints on the roads surrounding the hotel, while surveillance is at its maximum. According to CNN Türk, the measures are so strict that “not even a bird is allowed to fly.”

The hotel is located near the United States Embassy and not far from the Presidential Complex, where the summit’s main meetings will take place.

The 36th NATO Summit will bring together in Ankara the leaders of the Alliance’s 32 member states, as well as around 100 ministers, senior diplomats and representatives of international organizations. For Turkey, this is the first time it has hosted a NATO summit since 2004.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has already arrived in Ankara, while delegations from various countries have begun to arrive to take part in the summit proceedings.

One of the most important points of the visit will be the one-on-one meeting between Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, scheduled for July 7. After this meeting, the two leaders are expected to appear at a joint press conference.

In the evening, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his wife Emine Erdogan will host an official dinner at the Presidential Complex for the participating leaders and their spouses.

Discussions at the summit will focus on some of the most important issues in global security, including increased defense spending, strengthening NATO’s deterrence capabilities, the war in Ukraine, threats in the Euro-Atlantic area and developments on the Alliance’s southern flank.

Mark Rutte is expected to ask member states to implement the commitment to raise defense spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product by 2035, a target agreed last year under pressure from the Trump administration.

The Ankara Summit is being regarded as one of NATO’s most important meetings in recent years, at a time when global security challenges and geopolitical tensions continue to dominate the international agenda.
