Tragic Ebola toll in Congo surpasses 1,000 victims, concern grows over spread

The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a severe health crisis, as the Ebola epidemic has claimed the lives of more than one thousand people, according to reports from the continent’s leading health authority.

The virus is spreading at an unprecedented speed, fueled by armed violence, resistance from the local population, and an inconsistent response from the responsible institutions.

During a health meeting held on Wednesday in Ghana, Dr. Jean Casey, head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), announced that the number of confirmed fatalities has reached 1,031.

He warned that the loss of life continues because vaccines, medical treatments, and the necessary financial resources to fight the disease are lacking.

The latest statistics published by the Congolese Ministry of Health as of Monday show a total of 2,473 identified cases, of which at least 737 patients are being treated in hospital facilities or under isolation conditions.

This epidemic, which was officially declared on May 15, differs from previous outbreaks because it is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine or cure yet exists. Moreover, the fatality rate is the highest ever recorded for an Ebola epidemic. By comparison, during the West African crisis between 2013 and 2016, which resulted in over 11,000 deaths from approximately 28,000 cases, it took roughly eight months to surpass the one thousand victim mark.
