Tragic accident in Ireland as train hits vehicle at crossing: 12-year-old dies, father hospitalized

A 12-year-old boy died in County Mayo, Ireland, after the vehicle he was traveling in was struck by a train at a railway crossing.

The collision occurred on Thursday at around 8:45 p.m. in Kiltybo, near Ballyhaunis. Irish police and emergency crews arrived at the scene after being notified of the collision between the train and the car.

According to the BBC, the 12-year-old was a passenger in the vehicle. Despite the efforts of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a man in his 40s, was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he received medical treatment. Authorities said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Everyone traveling on the train was evacuated safely, and no other injuries were reported.

Specialist road accident investigators are expected to carry out a technical examination at the scene. As a result, the road in the area where the collision occurred remains closed to traffic.

The coroner has also been notified of the incident. The 12-year-old’s body was taken to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital, while authorities are expected to arrange a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
