Tourists Flock to Ithaca Following the Success of “The Odyssey,” Even Though Nolan Did Not Film a Single Scene There

The Greek island of Ithaca, known as the legendary birthplace of the Homeric hero Odysseus, is experiencing an unprecedented wave of visitors following the theatrical release of Christopher Nolan’s film “The Odyssey.”

One enthusiastic traveler said he had studied Ancient Greek and the epic poem since childhood and had always considered visiting the island an enduring dream.

The legacy of Homer’s poem is evident in every corner of the island, promoted through an array of monuments, sculptures and distinctive souvenirs filling local shops.

In the central squares and near the town hall, statues of Odysseus and Homer dominate the landscape, while boats bearing names such as “Telemachus,” the hero’s son, or “Calypso,” the nymph who held him captive, cut through the crystal-clear waters of the harbor.

Souvenir sellers display busts of Homer and Penelope, Odysseus’ faithful wife, while replicas of the famous Trojan Horse are available for those with deeper pockets.

Located in the Ionian Sea and far from Greece’s main tourist routes, Ithaca, with its stunning coves and pristine waters, has never previously been a typical tourist destination. However, the new film has sparked extraordinary public interest, even though none of the production was physically filmed on the island.

This has caused some disappointment among some of its approximately 3,000 permanent residents, for whom the film has been screened only twice at open-air cinemas since its worldwide premiere on July 16, according to AFP.

Mayor Dionysis Stanitsas confirmed that local authorities had held talks with the production team about bringing part of the shoot to Ithaca, but this did not prove possible. Despite this, he remained optimistic, emphasizing that everyone who sees “The Odyssey” will be encouraged to plan a visit to the island and that the community is ready to welcome them.

Meanwhile, archaeology experts welcome this new influx of tourists, who, they say, are not simply looking for beaches and sunshine but are eager to explore the depths of history and mythology.
