Today’s deadline for Electoral Code, EU signals: Without political pact, 4.2 million euros lost

Political forces in North Macedonia are facing a narrow window of time to find common ground on electoral code reforms. A clear message has come from the European Union: the lack of a consensus by today would cost the state 4.2 million euros in grants from European coffers, INA news agency reports.

This warning was expressed by EU ambassador Mihalis Rokas, underlining that improving electoral legislation is part of the package of commitments made under the Reform Agenda and requires implementation without delay.

During a ceremony where the State Transport Inspectorate was equipped with new cars purchased with EU funds, Rokas expressed optimism that the political spectrum will find a compromise in the final hours.

“The deadline is today, and I hope the parties overcome their differences. It concerns a grant of 4.2 million euros, money that will be directed to initiatives with direct impact on citizens’ lives,” he emphasized.

The diplomat assessed that the European Union’s enlargement is moving at an accelerated pace and that some aspiring countries have already made visible progress towards membership. In his view, North Macedonia must catch this wave and not get stuck on the integration path.

He added that the bloc’s enlargement is no longer perceived simply as a political mechanism, but as a strategic investment in the stability, security, and economic growth of the continent.

Rokas also revealed that, contrary to public perception of stagnation, intensive diplomatic consultations are underway to avoid obstacles blocking the country’s EU path and to create the necessary ground for opening accession negotiations./INA/
