Theft at Villena Museum: 3,000-Year-Old Bronze Age Treasure Disappears

A rare archaeological collection from the Bronze Age was stolen in the early hours of Thursday from the museum in the city of Villena, in Spain’s Alicante province.

The target of the theft was the Villena Treasure (Tesoro de Villena), a roughly 3,000-year-old trove consisting mainly of precious works made of gold, silver, iron and amber.

After the museum alarm was activated at 05:16 a.m., the Guardia Civil and the Judicial Police arrived at the scene. According to municipal sources cited by the Spanish news agency EFE, investigators are trying to reconstruct the course of events and identify the objects that were taken.

Authorities have not yet determined whether the entire treasure or only part of the collection has disappeared, so the exact scale of the theft remains unclear.

Dating to around 1000 BCE, the Villena Treasure is considered one of Europe’s most important metallurgical collections from this period.

The collection contains 59 objects, with a total weight of nearly 10 kilograms. It includes 11 cups, 28 bracelets and three vessels, as well as items made of silver, amber, iron and gold.

The treasure’s significance goes beyond the value of its precious materials. It carries immense historical and archaeological importance and is considered priceless to Europe’s cultural heritage.

The discovery that changed archaeological knowledge of the region

The history of the Villena Treasure dates back to the autumn of 1963, when it was discovered under unusual circumstances.

In October of that year, a bracelet was found in soil brought from Rambla del Panadero, in the Sierra del Morón de Villena. The workers initially mistook it for part of a truck engine.

Ángel Tomás, the project manager, placed the object somewhere everyone could see it, believing it was a truck bearing and that its owner might return to collect it.

The bracelet later ended up with local silversmith Carlos Miguel Escobre. He suspected that the object might be of particular importance and decided to contact José María Soler, who at the time was director of the Municipal Archaeological Museum.

Analysis of the bracelet prompted the start of archaeological searches at Rambla del Panadero. After several days of excavations, on December 1, 1963, Soler and his colleagues discovered the treasure inside a vessel hidden in the bed of the stream.

The discovery was described as one of the most important Bronze Age finds in Europe. More than six decades later, the treasure has become the subject of a police investigation, as Spanish authorities try to solve the theft and determine exactly what was taken from the museum.
