Two powerful earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela within seconds of each other have confronted the country with one of the most unusual and most destructive seismic episodes of recent years.
In less than a minute, a magnitude 7.2 tremor was first recorded west of Caracas, and just 39 seconds later it was followed by another, even stronger earthquake measuring magnitude 7.5.

Seismology specialists describe this development as a “double seismic event,” in which two interconnected ruptures may have transferred tectonic stress from one to the other, significantly increasing the destructive potential. Initial analyses show that the second earthquake released nearly three times more energy, making the situation markedly more serious than in the case of a single удар.
The location of the quake is part of a zone of high geological activity, where the Caribbean Plate collides with the South American plates and forms a complex fault system. Experts suspect that the El Guayabo and Morón faults may have played a role in this seismic sequence, although verification is still ongoing.
One of the biggest concerns is linked to the fact that the seismic energy appears to have spread toward Caracas, placing the capital directly in the path of the impact. Combined with the shallow depth of the earthquakes and loose soil in some areas, this has led to strong amplification of the shaking and increased damage to infrastructure.
Authorities, together with experts, warn that in the coming days and weeks the region may face many aftershocks, some of which could have considerable magnitude. At the same time, the response on the ground is being complicated by the lack of a modern warning system and limited emergency capacities.
Seismological models suggest that the aftershocks may continue for a long time. In addition, the risk of landslides, further collapses, and additional damage to buildings that have already been affected remains high.
According to scientists, this is not only a natural disaster, but also a severe test of the resilience of the country’s infrastructure and institutions. In this way, Venezuela is entering a prolonged period of uncertainty, while analyses of the nature of the rupture and the possible risks ahead continue.
