The New York Times covers protests in Albania: Thousands of Albanians flood the streets of Tirana!

Protests by students and young people against Edi Rama’s government have attracted international attention, including coverage by the prestigious American newspaper The New York Times.

On October 17, the newspaper published an article titled “What you need to know about the violent protests in Albania,” examining the demonstrations sweeping the country and growing discontent with the government.

According to the article, students’ demands concerning education have become intertwined with broader public grievances, including the rising cost of living and the luxury tourism project linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The movement, which began in opposition to tourism projects in protected coastal areas, has now turned into protests with social and political demands.

Students oppose university conditions and the cost of education, and say they see little prospect for the future. They are also calling for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign.

The escalation of the protests has also been reported by the international news agency Reuters. It says the student movement has spread beyond Tirana and that protesters are demanding Rama leave power.

Clashes between demonstrators and police have been accompanied by violence. Tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets have been used, and public and private property has been damaged.

The prime minister has rejected calls to resign, saying the unrest could put Albania’s aspirations to join the European Union at risk.
