The 2026-2027 school year begins in North Macedonia, with 238,000 students returning to class

Around 238,000 students in North Macedonia are starting the 2026-2027 school year today. Of these, 174,000 are primary school students, while 64,000 attend secondary schools.

Following the end of the summer holidays, classes will continue until June 10 of next year. For graduating students, the school year ends on May 17. The winter break, which marks the pause between the two semesters, will last from December 31 to January 21.

Final figures for enrollment in first grade and secondary schools are expected to be announced soon. So far, the Ministry of Education has registered 14,952 first-grade students and 16,932 students in the first year of secondary education.

The schools have received textbook samples, in line with the requirements of the Ministry of Education. Meanwhile, the reorganization of the school network is also continuing, including the closure of institutions with low student numbers in rural areas. This process is taking place in parallel with the introduction of single-shift schooling.

Minister Janevska said that 622,000 textbooks had been secured and that, compared with the year before she took over the institution, 50 million denars had been saved. According to her, for the third consecutive year, the textbooks were purchased on time and in the quantities requested by the schools.

“The books have been delivered, and the schools can distribute them to students starting September 1. I am pleased that textbooks are no longer a challenge as they were in the past,” Janevska said./Telegrafi/
