Protests against Edi Rama’s government have taken a more confrontational turn, as clashes and calls for the Albanian prime minister’s resignation have intensified in Tirana.

After several months of mobilization, the response of students and citizens is fueling debate over whether this discontent could bring about a significant change in the country’s political landscape.

Clashes with police and the escalation of the situation have increased concerns about the government’s response to protesters. It remains to be seen whether this wave of protests will have concrete consequences for Edi Rama and the Socialist Party.

Albanian publicist Skënder Kapiti, speaking to “Bota sot,” criticized Rama’s government and the treatment protesters have received, in his view.

Kapiti said that young Albanians had protested peacefully for a long period, but the authorities’ arrogant behavior and police interventions pushed the citizens’ response toward a more confrontational form.

According to him, Albania’s patriotic youth had been protesting for 135 days with civic spirit and democratic culture, opposing a corrupt regime and a government in which more than half of the ministers, deputy ministers and directors, as well as several mayors, including Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, are being investigated, have been arrested or are expected to be arrested for stealing public funds.

The publicist said that protesters faced arrogance, insults and accusations, while, according to him, most of the media, newspapers and television stations took the government’s side against them. He added that police provocation of students and the force’s abuse of its powers compelled protesters to respond more forcefully.

Kapiti linked Edi Rama’s refusal to resign to his fear of facing justice after leaving office.

He stressed that the prime minister’s stance was one of the main factors prolonging the protests and keeping alive the tensions that had developed in Tirana.

“The prime minister’s refusal to resign shows his fear that, after completing his term as prime minister, he will have to face justice,” the publicist said.

According to Kapiti, Rama’s insistence has caused exhaustion and suffering among protesters, as well as material damage and injuries during the clashes.

In conclusion, Skënder Kapiti warned that the consequences of this situation would not fall solely on Edi Rama, but also on the Socialist Party.

He argued that the Socialists would bear political responsibility for supporting the current government, comparing the situation with the responsibility once borne by the former Communist Party.

“The Socialist Party will face the consequences of this misgovernance and will be held politically accountable for its blind support of its government, just as happened once with the former Communist Party,” Skënder Kapiti concluded in his statement to “Bota sot.”
