Tensions rise between Ukraine and Russia as Kyiv attacks Novorossiysk with drones

The Black Sea is facing a newly designated high-risk area following a Ukrainian strike on military and energy infrastructure at the Russian port of Novorossiysk.

EOS Marine issued a maritime security alert today, linking the incident to an interstate or internal armed conflict. The warning covers the eastern part of the Black Sea and maritime routes near the Russian coast.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainian forces targeted the Novorossiysk naval base, an oil terminal, the port’s military facilities and warships equipped to transport missiles. So far, the extent of the damage has not been verified, and there is no information that any commercial vessel was hit.

The significance of the attack is also linked to Novorossiysk’s importance for maritime transport. It is the Russian port handling the largest volume of cargo, with exports of crude oil, petroleum products, grain, metals and containers passing through it. Up to one-third of Russia’s grain exports are also transported through this area.

The incident could lead to longer shipping times, increased inspections and higher war-risk insurance premiums.

The alert issued by EOS Marine does not imply the closure of the commercial port. It indicates an expansion of the military threat into an area where military installations, energy infrastructure and high levels of commercial maritime activity are located close to one another.
