Technical Problem After Takeoff: Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 Returns to Munich Airport

A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 bound for Hanoi returned to Munich Airport shortly after takeoff after a technical problem was reported, causing chaos at the airport.

Flightradar24 data shows that the aircraft remained airborne for more than two hours. During that time, it circled to burn fuel and reduce its weight before landing.

There are suspicions that the aircraft may have gone beyond the runway during takeoff. In footage published by ABC News, the Boeing 787 is seen leaving the runway as a large cloud of dust forms behind it.

Vietnam Airlines confirmed the flight’s return to Munich, attributing it to a “technical problem,” but the company did not disclose the nature of the aircraft’s malfunction.

According to the airline, the crew followed all required procedures and landed safely at Munich Airport. “The passengers and cabin crew are safe,” Vietnam Airlines said.

After landing, the aircraft also disrupted the airport’s normal operations. Munich Airport authorities said the Boeing 787 was unable to leave the northern runway under its own power and remained stranded there.

The northern runway was temporarily closed because of the incident, while flights were redirected to the southern runway.

Vietnam Airlines said it is cooperating with the competent authorities and relevant bodies on the technical inspection of the aircraft.

The company is expected to release further information once the inspection of the Boeing 787 has been completed and further operational measures have been determined.
