Tahiraj opposes call for Gërvalla’s dismissal: “No! This must not happen

Protests are continuing in Kosovo following the Special Court in The Hague’s decision to sentence former KLA leaders.

In addition to opposing the court ruling, protesters have addressed several demands to the Government and the Presidency of Kosovo. Their demands include the dismissal of Justice Minister Donika Gërvalla, as well as increased support for the defense of the accused.

Activist Saim Tahiraj, speaking to “Bota sot,” described the protests against the Special Court’s decisions as harmful and counterproductive for Kosovo.

According to him, justice cannot be achieved through street rallies or political pressure, but only through courts and procedures established by law.

Tahiraj has also voiced his support for Minister Donika Gërvalla’s position.

“Such protests are bringing no benefit to Kosovo. On the contrary, they are directly harming the state of Kosovo on the international stage. It is unclear what logic there is in seeking ‘justice’ in the streets in response to a judicial process.

Justice is not determined by crowds, protests or political pressure, but by the courts. If someone believes that justice has been violated, they have legal mechanisms and avenues available to challenge the decision. Appeals must be filed through the institutions and procedures provided for by law, not through pressure in the streets.

Donika Gërvalla is almost the only political and institutional figure who has had the courage to publicly articulate, by name, the bitter truth. For this position, she deserves the respect and support of all those who sincerely love truth and justice,” he said.

The activist also opposed the call for the Justice Minister’s resignation, describing it as a paradox.

He stressed that Gërvalla should remain in office, while any opposition to court decisions should be pursued through institutions and legal means, not through protests or political pressure.

“The demand that Justice Minister Gërvalla resign precisely now, from those who claim they are seeking ‘justice’ in the streets, constitutes a major paradox. To demand the minister’s removal because she is defending the functioning of justice essentially means trying to silence and bury the truth.

No! This must not happen.

Ms. Donika Gërvalla must remain in office until the end of her term and continue defending the principle that justice cannot be replaced by pressure from the streets.

Kosovo is a state and, as such, must respect institutions, the law and judicial processes. We may not like a decision, it may cause us pain, or we may disagree with it, but our response to it must be institutional and legal.

Even when a decision is painful, justice must be determined by the courts. Their decisions cannot be replaced by chants, protests or political pressure.

In a state governed by the rule of law, justice is sought in court, not in the streets,” Tahiraj concluded.
