Sultan of Brunei Expels Son’s Wife from Royal Family for “Inappropriate Behavior

Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei, has stripped Pengiran Rabiatul Antawiyya of all her royal titles and ruled that his son’s wife is no longer part of the royal family.

The action against the 33-year-old relates to conduct that the palace described as “inappropriate behavior.” According to the assessment, she is suspected of having “tarnished the good name of the monarchy” and shown “disrespect” toward the sultan.

The palace has not clarified what Rabiatul Antawiyya specifically did to anger the sultan. The Office of the Grand Chamberlain has only confirmed that she has been stripped of all her titles and is no longer recognized as a member of the royal family.

Rabiatul Antawiyya became a member of the royal family in 2015 after marrying Prince Abdul Malik. He is the sultan’s second son from his first marriage to Queen Saleha.

Their marriage was celebrated with a lavish 10-day ceremony. The couple have four daughters and, according to reports, the sultan’s decision has not affected the children’s royal titles.

One of the World’s Most Powerful Monarchs

Hassanal Bolkiah has occupied the throne since 1967, making him one of the world’s longest-reigning monarchs. Since 1984, when Brunei gained independence from Britain, he has also served as the country’s prime minister.

In addition to his extensive political powers, the sultan heads the ministries of Defense, Foreign Affairs and Finance. He also exercises firm control over Brunei’s security institutions and religious policy.

International organizations have criticized his rule for years over human rights concerns. In 2014, Brunei began implementing a strict Islamic penal code that included severe punishments for certain offenses.

There was a strong international backlash in 2019, when provisions came into force prescribing death by stoning in some cases involving same-sex relations and adultery. The government later said that the existing moratorium on executions would also apply to these provisions.

Despite facing criticism, Hassanal Bolkiah has maintained close ties with the British royal family. His relationship was particularly close with Queen Elizabeth II, whom he met several times over the years.
