Speeding is claiming more lives on the roads: more than 1,500 licenses suspended for speeding in one week as experts call for greater safety

Driving above the road’s speed limit is suspected of having caused Wednesday morning’s accident in which three young people lost their lives in Durrës.

Speeding appears to be one of the most dangerous violations, and despite tougher measures, it continues to occur at very high rates. Top Channel has learned that in just one week, police across the country suspended more than 1,500 licenses for this violation alone.

Experts say that speeding, combined with a lack of road signs, can prove fatal.

“Speeding does not give the driver enough time to maneuver. That road has dangerous curves. More road signs are needed,” said expert Gëzim Hoxha.

With the aim of preventing accidents, several articles of the Road Code were amended two weeks ago. Among the changes was the permanent revocation of the licenses of repeat offenders caught driving under the influence of alcohol, while using a mobile phone may result in the suspension of a license. Under the new changes, fines for dangerous maneuvers can reach 60,000 lekë. However, experts say these measures are not enough.

“After every accident, an in-depth investigation must be carried out: the vehicle, the road, the signage, the driver, and then regulations and Council of Ministers decisions must be drafted,” said expert Gëzim Hoxha.

Despite periodic changes to the Road Code and campaigns by the Road Police to prevent accidents, the number of road fatalities continues to be concerning every year.
