Snopçe: Neither the balancer nor the law on fair representation provides safeguards against abuses

Halil Snopçe, an MP from the Alliance for Albanians, stated that the balancer had no mechanisms that would prevent abuses, in which Albanians would not declare themselves as Macedonians and vice versa. According to him, this problem will not be solved by the law on fair and adequate representation either.

He also stressed that the Venice Commission has assessed that this law does not prevent abuses and does not eliminate the shortcomings of the balancer. According to Snopçe, there is a series of recommendations that have not been implemented so far.

“You refer a great deal to the Venice Commission, so here are its recommendations that have not been implemented. Real mechanisms must be ensured for the implementation of the law, as the Venice Commission says; then the balance between meritocracy and fair and adequate representation must be maintained; statements related to declaring ethnic affiliation should be avoided. The Venice Commission says that this law does not prevent abuses,” said Snopçe.
