Siljanovska-Davkova: Two Years On, the State Functions Better, but Corruption and Crime Remain Key Obstacles

Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, President of North Macedonia, has observed that the country is moving in the right direction and now displays a higher level of functionality than two years ago. However, she stressed that the phenomena of corruption, criminality, and partisan influence continue to constitute the most serious barriers for the state.

During a conversation with “Kanal 5,” the president said there is progress, highlighting the Growth Plan and the approval of a set of laws affecting the justice system, which, according to her, now require concrete implementation.

“I think we are on the right track. The state functions better than in the past in some aspects, but transformations do not materialize overnight or simply with the adoption of a legal act. It takes time for reforms to bear fruit,” stated Siljanovska-Davkova.

She reiterated that the deepest wounds of the country remain corruption, criminal activities, and partisanship.

“The state needs strong institutions, not strong personalities. Where partisanship and politicization prevail, corruption and crime find more fertile ground. I remain stunned by some data about what has happened in certain institutions. It is intolerable that someone can be absent from work and yet be paid,” the head of state added.

In her vision, the main priorities should focus on protecting the most vulnerable segments of the population, implementing structural changes, and fostering economic growth.

She insisted on the need for a determined confrontation with corruption and crime, the appointment of suitable candidates to key positions through open mechanisms, maintaining economic stability, and accelerating the reform processes related to the European Union.

The president also emphasized the importance of filling vacant positions in the diplomatic service, while the Parliament must improve its efficiency, issue quality legislation, oversee executive activity, and strengthen ties with civil society organizations.

In closing, Siljanovska-Davkova appealed to all parliamentary political forces to address divisions and political issues within the Parliament, through dialogue, rather than at press conferences or on television platforms. For her, institutions are the arenas where debate unfolds and decisions are made for the benefit of the people.
