Sicily in the Grip of Flames: Over 1,000 Fires, Evacuations, and Temperatures Above 40 Degrees

A powerful wave of fires has engulfed Sicily, turning the Italian island into an uninterrupted battleground for hundreds of firefighters. Rescue teams are battling dozens of hotspots in forested and vegetation-covered areas, which are seriously threatening many communities in the southern part of the island.

The explosive spread of the flames is being fueled by a combination of extreme factors: temperatures that in some regions have exceeded 45 degrees Celsius, scorching dry winds, and a prolonged drought that has left the land without a drop of moisture.

Since Saturday, the Italian fire service has been engaged in extinguishing over 1,000 fires across the territory of Sicily. A Civil Protection representative has described the crisis as “serious,” underscoring that the complete lack of moisture on the ground is making every intervention extremely difficult.

The immediate danger has forced authorities to undertake mass evacuations. Around 100 residents have been removed from their homes, while a clinic in the central part of the island has evacuated 22 patients. Despite the continuous intervention of firefighting aircraft, the fire in this sector has resisted for days.

The hardest-hit areas are in the center of Sicily, near Castronovo and Santo Stefano di Quisquina. In addition to destroying vegetation, these hotspots have damaged the drinking water supply network, leaving around 20 communities in difficulty.

Fortunately, there are no reports of loss of life so far, and emergency crews are continuing their work without pause to isolate the still-active hotspots. The situation remains critical, as around 70% of the island’s territory is already classified as a high-risk desertification zone, a phenomenon worsened by increasingly frequent periods of extreme drought.

Sicily is no stranger to scorching heat waves. In August 2021, the thermometer in the city of Syracuse hit the record figure of 48.8 degrees Celsius, marking the highest temperature ever recorded on the European continent.
