Severe weather hits northeastern Spain, leaving 7 injured and 300 people evacuated from a campsite

Heavy rainfall that hit northeastern Spain overnight left at least seven people injured, while around 300 others were evacuated from a campsite.

At the port of Ronda de Berà, around 75 kilometers southwest of Barcelona, the collapse of a wall injured three people. Authorities said one of them was in more serious condition than the other two.

As a result of other incidents linked to the severe weather, four more people were taken to hospital. Among them were two people who sustained minor injuries when another wall collapsed at a campsite in Ronda de Berà.

Flooding and the risk of further collapses forced the evacuation of around 300 people staying at the campsite. Around 100 of them were temporarily accommodated in a municipal sports hall.

During the response operations, emergency services dealt with around 200 incidents. Most involved people who had become trapped in vehicles on roads covered by water.

In El Vendrell, a town with around 40,000 residents, water levels in the coastal area rose above half a meter. Flooded roads were also reported in several nearby municipalities, including Coma-Ruga and Torredembarra.

Data from the local meteorological service showed that more than 100 liters of rain per square meter were recorded in some areas of Catalonia. Meanwhile, in certain parts of the coast, up to 200 liters of rain per square meter fell within just a few hours.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, while emergency teams continue working to manage the consequences of the intense rainfall and assist people affected by the flooding.
