Sevastopol left in darkness after Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure in Crimea

Sevastopol, the largest city in Crimea, has been left without electricity after a Ukrainian airstrike hit the power grid on the Russian-occupied peninsula, according to authorities installed by Moscow.

Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Russian-appointed governor, said that overnight Ukrainian drones struck a major power substation, causing widespread power outages. He warned that in some areas the lack of electricity could last until Wednesday evening.

Ukraine has also acknowledged carrying out the attack, explaining that the target was energy infrastructure used by Russian forces in Crimea.

Ukrainian military sources said the drones hit several targets in the region, including military areas and other infrastructure in Crimea, including Bakhchisarai, Kerch and the Ai-Petri mountain area.

In response to the situation, local authorities activated emergency measures on the power grid and urged residents to reduce consumption, also limiting the use of phones and electrical devices. Residents were also advised to look after elderly neighbors, as temperatures hover around 30°C.

The latest attacks have further worsened the supply situation on the peninsula, where fuel shortages and sales restrictions are already being reported, while authorities have partially suspended supplies for residents.

Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, remains one of the most sensitive flashpoints of the conflict, as Ukraine has stepped up attacks on strategic infrastructure in territories controlled by Russia.
