Salihaj: Failure to elect president could return Kosovo to new elections

The constitution of the Kosovo Assembly and the formation of the new Government, carried out yesterday, ended a long period of uncertainty and institutional deadlock.

However, the PDK’s appeal to the Constitutional Court could once again raise questions about the legitimacy of the Assembly’s constitution process.

According to former LDK deputy Adem Salihaj, the creation of new institutions does not mean the end of the crisis. He warned that failure to elect the president could devalue the Assembly and the Government, pushing the country toward new elections.

Salihaj said that, under normal circumstances, the constitution of the Assembly and the vote on the Government would be considered the conclusion of the electoral process. But, according to him, in the current circumstances these developments could be just the first step toward a new institutional failure.

He criticized the political class, accusing it of being involved in clashes fueled by primitive grudges and petty interests. Salihaj warned that Kosovo could go to elections again, which would be the fourth in two years, while expressing fear that even this cycle might not be the last.

According to him, the country remains trapped in a vicious circle and is on the brink of state failure. He assessed that Kosovo is continuously proving to the world that political conflicts can lead to the destruction of state institutions.

The former LDK deputy also stressed that people who damage and destroy institutions cannot be considered representatives of the citizens.

Salihaj mentioned the sacrifices of tens of thousands of Albanians of past generations, the rape of thousands of women, sisters, and mothers, and the killings and massacres of women, the elderly, and children. He said that those who have no sensitivity to this history should have no role in the state and do not deserve to be legitimized through the vote or delegated to institutions.

“Those who destroy state institutions cannot be our representatives,” concluded Salihaj.
