Safety in schools”: AKU launches inspections of fast-food outlets, pie shops, pizzerias, markets and educational institutions

As the start of the new school year approaches, the National Food Authority has implemented a broad inspection plan across the country as part of the “Safety in Schools” package.

Inspections are being carried out at food businesses operating near educational institutions, including fast-food outlets, pie shops, pizzerias, markets and other retail outlets. The focus also includes premises where food is prepared for specific groups, such as nurseries, kindergartens and schools.

The AKU said the measures aim to reduce and prevent risks that may be associated with food consumed by children and pupils.

The inspections are being conducted under the “Safety in Schools” package, Law No. 9863, dated 28 January 2008, “On Food”, as amended, as well as Inspection Law No. 99/2024, as amended.

During the checks, compliance with food safety requirements will be examined. Special attention will be paid to hygiene conditions, product expiry dates, traceability, hygiene and sanitary standards, and food product labelling.

The AKU will also take samples of food products for physical-chemical and microbiological analyses.

Through this action plan, the aim is to create the safest possible environment for children and pupils by preventing risks that may arise from food sold and consumed near schools.

As inspections continue, the National Food Authority will also conduct awareness campaigns for food business operators, as well as information and awareness activities in the pre-university education system. The focus will be on the key elements of food safety, compliance with regulations and the selection of safe food.
