After more than four years behind bars in Russia, former US Marine Robert Gilman has been released in a decision that American officials have interpreted as a direct signal from Vladimir Putin to Donald Trump. However, the move may be part of a broader Kremlin diplomatic strategy.

Sky News notes that the case is unusual because Gilman’s release was not accompanied by the return of any Russian prisoner. In previous cases, Moscow has used detained US citizens as part of prisoner exchange agreements.

The decision came after reports that Robert Gilman’s health had deteriorated significantly and that he was close to death. For this reason, US officials described the release as a “goodwill gesture” by the Russian president toward Trump.

A precedent unlike previous exchanges

Moscow has previously released US citizens under reciprocal agreements. One example was Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was released in 2024. A year earlier, in 2022, American basketball player Brittney Griner was exchanged for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

In Gilman’s case, Russia did not receive one of its imprisoned citizens in return. It is precisely the absence of an exchange that turns this release into a message of particular political significance.

The message the Kremlin may be sending Trump

Sky News’ analysis suggests that the Kremlin may be taking steps to improve relations with the White House, hoping that this move will yield benefits at a later stage.

The main issue remains the war in Ukraine. Russia has an interest in portraying Putin as a potential partner for Trump, someone with whom negotiations can be held and agreements reached. In this context, releasing an American prisoner without demanding an exchange could serve as a diplomatic investment.

The timing of the decision is no less significant. Moscow is facing growing pressure due to Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russian territory. Strikes on oil refineries are creating additional difficulties for the economy and wartime logistics, while efforts to launch peace talks remain stalled.

The shift in Trump-Zelensky relations

The Kremlin is also concerned about the recent rapprochement between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the British outlet, this development shows that the atmosphere in Washington has changed significantly compared with a year ago.

At that time, Trump appeared closer to Putin and was more optimistic about the possibility of an agreement that would align more closely with the Kremlin’s demands.

Under these circumstances, Robert Gilman’s release may not be merely a humanitarian act. For Moscow, this “gift” to Trump could represent an attempt to gain leverage in future negotiations over Ukraine.
