The citizens’ protest calling for the removal of Prime Minister Edi Rama entered its 40th day today. For 40 days, thousands of citizens have gathered peacefully in the square every afternoon, demanding the prime minister’s resignation and changes in Albanian politics.
In addition to the departure of the head of government, the protesters are also calling for a change in the political class, arguing that the country needs a new model of governance, with greater responsibility, transparency and accountability.

One of the slogans heard repeatedly during the protests is “Rama in prison, Berisha in prison.”
The civic movement began as a reaction against the construction of a tourist resort in Zvërnec. As the days have passed, the protest has expanded, turning into a gathering with broader political and institutional demands.
The protesters accuse the government of corruption, lack of transparency and misgovernance, while saying their dissatisfaction is tied to the way the country has been run in recent years.
Despite the passing of 40 days, participants say they will continue to come out to the square every day, peacefully, until their demands are met.
