Resignation in Indian higher education after turmoil over medical exam leaks

After weeks of strong student demonstrations, Dharmendra Pradhan, India’s Minister of Education, resigned from his post. The cause was the serious scandal that engulfed the admission system for medical faculties, where exams were leaked and sold illegally.

This move marked a significant triumph for the youth movement “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP), which led the national protests. They demanded accountability from the authorities and a radical reform of the testing process. Up to this point, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not yet made an official acknowledgment of the minister’s departure.

Immediately after Pradhan’s statement, the CJP movement announced the end of the strike, emphasizing that the government gave in to the main points of their platform. These include compensation for the families of students who died in the aftermath of the result cancellations, and the renegotiation of plans for restructuring the evaluation system.

Meanwhile, Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the CJP, described the resignation as a positive step, but warned that the work to transform the education system must not stop there.

On the other hand, the ruling party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), came out in support of the former minister. They described his act of resignation as an expression of a high sense of responsibility and a testament to his unblemished character.

The wave of protests initially broke out in reaction to allegations of leak of entrance exam questions for medical universities. The situation quickly degenerated into violent clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators, turning into a broad youth revolt. Young people were articulating larger demands for job openings, a transparent process, and deeply reformed education.

For the first time during this crisis, Prime Minister Modi reacted publicly this week, making it known that those responsible for this scandal have already been arrested. He further assured that his administration will take concrete steps to ensure the future of students.
