Record Temperatures Scorch Europe as Drought Threatens Energy Supplies and Wildfires Ravage 1.23 Million Hectares

Western Europe is experiencing the hottest start to summer ever recorded. Unusual temperatures, combined with severe drought, have fueled the spread of major wildfires and caused river flows to fall to dangerously low levels.

Data from the European Union’s Copernicus climate monitor shows that the average temperature during June and July was 21.62 degrees Celsius, or around 2.79 degrees above normal. The previous record was set in 2022.

The phenomenon has not been limited to land. July saw the highest temperature ever recorded for non-polar oceans, while records were reported in the Atlantic and the western Mediterranean.

As the continent faces another spell of extreme heat, weather forecasts warn that temperatures could rise even further this week.

Wildfires have grown to massive proportions as a result of high temperatures and a lack of rainfall. According to European Union figures, by August 6 the fires had affected more than 1.23 million hectares of land, particularly in Spain, France and Italy.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from areas at risk, while smoke has affected air quality across large parts of the continent.

Experts say climate change is worsening heatwaves and periods of drought. “As soils dry out, they lose their ability to provide natural cooling, allowing heat to build up more easily,” said Samantha Burgess, a climate expert at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

The effects of the drought have also been felt on Europe’s major rivers, including the Danube, Rhine and Seine. Falling water levels have hampered transportation, water supplies and energy production.

In Hungary and Romania, nuclear reactors cooled with water from the Danube were temporarily shut down after the river’s level fell too low.

The Danube in Budapest has reached exceptionally low levels, while conditions on some sections of the Rhine have raised concerns about navigation and river transport.

Scientists warn that such episodes could become more frequent in the future. “Managing water resources will become increasingly challenging,” they stress.

Europe continues to face a combination of extreme temperatures, wildfires and drought. According to forecasts, the current heatwave is not yet over.
