Rare German LS 6 Vessel Found Almost Intact in the Ionian Sea After 83 Years

One of the rarest German military vessels from World War II has been found in the Ionian Sea, 83 years after it sank. The wreck lies at a depth of 96 meters and has been preserved almost intact.

The vessel has been identified as the “Leichte Schnellboot 6,” also known as LS 6. This German Navy light motor torpedo boat was made of aluminum to ensure low weight and high speed. Evidence gathered so far indicates that it is the only surviving vessel of its kind in the world.

The search began in 2013, after information was discovered in German military archives about a Kriegsmarine vessel that had disappeared in September 1943 in the waters between Lefkada and Preveza.

Historical researcher Jorgos Karelas made a crucial contribution to gathering information and coordinating the search, which lasted for many years.

The wreck’s identity was confirmed by the AegeanTec team during a technical dive using a closed-circuit breathing system.

In the darkness of the depths, the divers made out the contours of the small vessel. It rests almost upright on the sandy seabed and is in an exceptionally good state of preservation.

Following Italy’s surrender, LS 6 was deployed to Greece alongside its sister vessel, LS 5, to take part in German operations in the Aegean. However, it was heavily damaged during a British air raid on Igoumenitsa.

As it was being towed to Piraeus for repairs, its aluminum structure sustained damage. Water entered the vessel, causing it to sink in the waters between Lefkada and Preveza.

Its final identification as LS 6 was based on its “Junkers Jumo” engines, the vessel’s dimensions, and the towing cable, which remains attached to the bow.

Greek media have described the find as a unique discovery in maritime history.
