Rama after egg-throwing incident in New York: Protests will not stop me, I will take the flag to United Europe

Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted on the “X” platform following an incident in New York, where Albanian protesters threw eggs at him during his visit to the United States.

In his message, Rama hit back at the protesters in harsh tones, stressing that such actions would not prevent him from continuing his political mission. He said he would not back down in the face of criticism and protests, as the goal remained Albania’s integration into the European Union.

The prime minister linked this process to the fight against corruption and judicial reform. According to him, today’s Albania is no longer the country of the past, while the institutional system has begun to demonstrate its ability to clean itself up.

Rama said the national flag had been raised by him “higher than ever before” in the eyes of the world. He added that he could not be stopped by mud, eggs or “drool” in his effort to take the Albanian flag to “the summit of United Europe.”

He said that creating an institutional system that fights corruption and enforces equality before the law constituted, in his view, an important achievement of his political mission. Rama argued that a country mired in corruption would not have a head-on fight against it and concrete results, whereas Albania, in his assessment, had now changed.

The prime minister also claimed that the European Union increasingly valued Albania for its efforts against corruption. At the end of his response, he used ironic epithets for the protesters and his critics, describing them as “hysterical hens from our village” who throw eggs into the air in the interests of the “strutting roosters of the political and media marketplace.”

Rama accused his opponents of believing they could defeat him through their constant accusations of corruption, which, he said, was being fought by the very system being built, as well as through insults and curses. He also mocked the way one of his critics writes, saying that “he writes Albanian with chicken feet.”
