Qirezi calls for a more in-depth investigation of PISA results and the factors affecting students

Education expert Bardha Qirezi says Kosovo’s results in the PISA test require more detailed scrutiny, particularly regarding student absences, the use of technology and the quality of teaching.

During an interview on the “Pasdite” programme on RTK, she said that only 20 percent of 15-year-olds in Kosovo had attended school regularly, without delays or absences.

Qirezi stressed that the number of absences in schools has also been alarming this year, adding that, in her view, the issue has not been addressed sufficiently.

She underlined that absences are directly linked to regular school attendance and called for the data to be reported more accurately, while also analysing the reasons that lead students not to attend classes.

According to the expert, the way absences are recorded needs to be reviewed and continuous monitoring of school attendance strengthened.

Turning to the use of digital tools, Qirezi said their impact is not necessarily always positive.

She explained that in Kosovo, technology has in some cases helped improve results and increase competence in science. According to her, more limited but deeper use has contributed to better results among children, while frequent use may have lowered them.

Qirezi also highlighted the need for investment in teachers, as well as for education policies to be developed on the basis of measurable results.

“It has been proven everywhere that if you invest in teachers, you have invested in the education system,” she said.

Another issue that, according to her, requires attention is the discrepancy between students’ grades and their results in achievement tests or matriculation exams.
