Videos posted on social media show several passengers trying to stop the flames from spreading by covering the battery with their bags. Indian media reported that crew members reacted immediately and extinguished the fire using fire extinguishers.
IndiGo said the diversion to Hyderabad was made after smoke began coming from a passenger’s personal electronic device. The pilots followed safety protocols, and the plane landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
No passengers or crew members were injured, and everyone is out of danger. The company said the journey to Chennai will continue on another aircraft.
IndiGo apologized to passengers for the disruption and said it was taking steps to limit delays. Refreshments were offered to travelers, while the company emphasized that their safety and the crew’s safety are its top priority.
