PISA will be forgotten, but the chaos in education will remain

The state of education in the country and the recently published PISA test results were the focus of a conversation with Blendi Hodai from the Forum for Educational Changes, a guest on Telegrafi Macedonia’s PodGo show.

According to Hodai, the PISA results were not surprising. He explained that FEC’s monitoring of educational institutions had already shown them the difficult situation the education system is in.

Hodai assessed that responsibility for this state of affairs falls on all actors involved in the educational process. He said that education is a matter of special importance for a people and that we must now see how things will be reflected after the PISA results.

He described the system as a chain where problems are passed from one link to another: a weak university prepares weak teachers, the latter produce weak students, while the weak student becomes a weak university student. In the end, according to him, such a student ends up in the private or public sector.

To change this situation in Macedonia, Hodai said a period of 5 to 10 years and the joint commitment of all institutions is needed. He mentioned that from 2006 until now the country has had 13 ministers, meaning that on average a new minister has been appointed every nine months. According to him, each minister brings new policies and this does not allow for sustainable development.

Speaking about Artificial Intelligence, he emphasized that its benefits or dangers depend on how it is used.

Hodai said that everything depends on people and their intentions; if AI falls into the hands of people who aim to do bad things, then the situation becomes problematic.

In the future, he sees himself in politics, because he does not want to be identified only as a person who has criticized. /Telegrafi/
