The name VMRO was first used during World War I, according to claims made by a former VMRO-DPMNE deputy and former director of the State Archive of North Macedonia on Vasko Eftov’s show “Në Qendër,” reported VESTIMAK.mk.

Petrovski stated that three members of the Central Committee were behind the adoption of this name: Todor Aleksandrov, Aleksandar Protogerov, and Petar Çaulev.
As evidence of the period’s context, he cited a historic photograph showing the three activists on a boat in Lake Ohrid, wearing Bulgarian military uniforms as officers of the Bulgarian army.
“That is when it first took the name VMRO; it did not have the name VMRO before,” Petrovski said during the show.
According to his explanation, Çaulev, Protogerov, and Aleksandrov, who at that time were acting as Central Committee members, were the people who formulated and defined the name VMRO.
The claim directly links the initial use of the VMRO acronym to World War I and these three historical figures, sparking discussions about the naming and historical continuity of the Organization.
