Pentagon Signs Long-Term Contracts to Boost Production of Defensive Missiles

The U.S. Department of Defense has formalized two new seven-year contracts with military industry giants General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GD-OTS) and Lockheed Martin. The primary goal of these agreements is to significantly expand missile production capacity and accelerate the supply chain for the country’s air defense.

At the center of these long-term agreements are efforts to increase production and reduce waiting times for essential components of interceptor systems. Specifically, they concern missiles for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and those for the upgraded Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE) version.

According to the official announcement, the targets are ambitious: production capacity for PAC-3 MSE interceptors will be tripled, while that for THAAD missiles will be quadrupled. Particular attention will also be paid to key components such as motor bodies, seeker sensor structures, and mechanisms for opening the missiles’ covers.

Pentagon officials emphasized that these contracts will provide the companies and their network of suppliers with greater long-term predictability of demand. This stability will enable them to invest in expanding their workforce, securing raw materials, and modernizing production lines.

The decision comes at a time when the United States is seeking to significantly strengthen its interceptor stockpiles and modernize its entire air and missile defense architecture.
