PDK to refer the Assembly’s constitution process to the Constitutional Court

Arian Tahiri, a deputy from the Democratic Party of Kosovo, said at a press conference that the process of constituting the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo had reached a point where constitutional interpretation was needed.

According to him, every action and decision arising from the constitutive session will be referred to the Constitutional Court for review.

Tahiri said that the PDK had made its position clear at the previous session as well, when Vlora Çitaku’s candidacy for deputy speaker of the Assembly was not approved.

He said the situation had arisen after deadlines were exceeded, repeated blockages, and new political conditions imposed by the Vetëvendosje Movement.

The PDK deputy accused Prime Minister Kurti of ignoring the constitutional order and the decisions of the Constitutional Court.

“Throughout this period, Mr. Kurti has played games with the institutions, bypassed the constitutional order and the decisions of the Constitutional Court. For narrow political interests, he has violated the constitutional deadlines and attempted to use the political figures of opposition parties as well. All his actions have been political maneuvers to implement his own political scenario,” Tahiri said.

He added that the majority’s assessment that the Assembly had already been constituted did not comply with the constitutional deadlines.

“The procedures carried out today and the conclusion that the Assembly has been constituted are outside the constitutional deadlines. For this reason, everything arising from this Assembly will be referred by us to the Constitutional Court for an assessment of its legality. Kosovo must function on the basis of the constitutional order, and not according to an order that Kurti seeks to build for his own political interests,” he said.

Tahiri announced that the PDK’s experts had begun preparing the case to be referred to the Constitutional Court and that the complaint would cover the entire process.

The eleventh legislature of the Kosovo Assembly was constituted on Sunday, following the election of the Assembly’s deputy speakers.

At today’s session, the Assembly elected Kujtim Shala of the LDK as deputy speaker, while Emilja Rexhepi and Tanja Vujoviq of the Serb List were elected to represent the non-Serb community.

The PDK did not take part in the plenary session and consequently withdrew Vlora Çitaku’s nomination for the post of deputy speaker.

Ardian Gola had previously been elected deputy speaker on Friday.

Also today, at an extraordinary session, the “Kurti 4” government was put to a vote and received 62 votes in favor.
