Activity at Brussels Airport was suspended for around 30 minutes after a drone was detected in its airspace. The news was announced by Belgian air traffic controller Skeyes, almost a year after a series of similar incidents caused major concern in the country.
According to spokesperson Kurt Verwilgen, the relevant procedure was implemented after the drone was spotted, providing for the suspension of runway traffic for up to 30 minutes after the latest incident.

Verwilgen provided no further details about the drone’s model or type and did not disclose the number of diverted flights. He added that the device left the area after several minutes.
Belgian authorities announced in November last year that they had decided to purchase defensive kamikaze drones from a Latvian company. The decision came after several similar incursions near civilian airports, military bases and a nuclear power plant, which had caused disruptions and raised security concerns in recent weeks.
Belgian officials said at the time that the incidents showed signs of Russian involvement, but acknowledged that they had no evidence to prove this. Russia denied any role in the events.
